GLOBIO contribution:
This study is an exploration of structural changes in production and consumption to reduce biodiversity loss. The models GLOBIO and EcoOcean were used to calculate biodiversity effects of eight possible measures and one package of measures.
The report is a contribution to The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity (TEEB) and will be presented during COP10 in Nagoya.

GLOBIO contribution:
This assessment focuses on projected estimates of biodiversity change for the 21st century. Results were used for the third Global Biodiversity Outlook.
The GLOBIO contribution consisted of a synthesis of results from earlier analyses for GEO4 and GBO2.
UNEP
GLOBIO contribution:
Analysis of the effects of 6 global policy options to reduce the rate of loss of biodiversity (see also GBO2). The study concludes that further enhancement of agricultural productivity (‘closing the yield gap’) is the key factor in reducing the need for land and, consequently, the rate of biodiversity loss. This option should be implemented carefully in order to not cause additional undesired effects, such as emissions of excess nutrients and pesticides and land degradation.

GLOBIO contribution:
This study provides further insights into the areas of environment and sustainable development, derived from four global assessments which were published in 2007 and 2008: GEO4, Climate Change 2007, OECD Environmental Outlook and IAASTD. GLOBIO contributed to all of these outlooks. From the assessments, land use emerges as a new theme for international policy, as the competition over land is growing.

GLOBIO contribution:
GLOBIO was used for the study Cost of Policy Inaction on Biodiversity (COPI Biodiversity). This project was carried out by a consortium of European research institutes. GLOBIO was applied to calculate expected biodiversity impacts of a ‘business as usual’ scenario. Other institutes used the GLOBIO results to calculate the losses on the potential of ecosystems to deliver goods & services, and consequently the economic value.
Results of COPI Biodiversity were included in ‘The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity’ project (TEEB) and presented at the 9th CBD COP in Bonn, 2008.

GLOBIO contribution:
Analysis of biodiversity status and trends in the reference scenario. Results show that without additional technological developments and policy changes global biodiversity is likely to decline further. This is mainly the consequence of the large area of agricultural land needed to feed the human population.

GLOBIO contribution:
Analysis of the consequences for terrestrial biodiversity of several policy packages, relative to a business-as-usual reference scenario. The packages include measures in the following areas: agricultural trade liberalization, climate change mitigaion, air pollution and waste treatment

GLOBIO contribution:
Analysis of the consequences in four alternative scenarios for the remaining terrestrial biodiversity, in terms of the biodiversity indicator MSA. Next to different land-use scenarios, four alternative routes were designed to increasing the extent and use of protected areas (developed by UNEP-WCMC). The scenarios were also evaluated for the marine environment using the EcoOcean model.

GLOBIO contribution:
The main conclusions of the study Crossroads of Life on Earth are included in second Global Biodiversity Outlook. GLOBIO was used to analyse the effects of 6 global policy options to reduce the rate of loss of biodiversity.
The Global Biodiversity Forum, preceding CBD COP8 in Curitiba (2006), used the GLOBIO assessment for her recommendations to the conference of the ministers of state.

GLOBIO contribution:
GLOBIO was used to evaluate six different policy options. In co-operation with the secretariat of the CBD this study was used to evaluate the 2010 target for biodiversity. The results are briefly summarised in the second Global Biodiversity Outlook.

GLOBIO contribution:
A comprehensive assessment of the cumulative impacts of human development and climate change on biodiversity. Region: the greater Asian mountain range of the Himalayas-Hindu Kush, Tibet and Tian Shan. The study also included the effects down river.

GLOBIO contribution:
GEO3 used four scenarios to explore the future of the environment. In GEO3 the models GLOBIO2 and IMAGE/NCI were first applied in parallel. These models are the predecessors of the current model GLOBIO3.
