The Environmental Food Crisis

This rapid response assessment warns that up to 25% of the world’s food production may become lost due to environmental breakdown by 2050 unless action is taken. The study concludes that further enhancement of agricultural productivity (‘closing the yield gap’) is the key factor in reducing the need for land and, consequently, the rate of biodiversity loss. This option should be implemented carefully in order to not cause additional undesired effects, such as emissions of excess nutrients and pesticides and land degradation.
