Despite higher agricultural productivity 850 million people are still starving. The problem is back on the policy agenda due to rising food prices. The International assessment of agricultural science and technology (IAASTD) investigated the technical and policy options for agriculture to contribute to poverty alleviation in a sustainable way, without further increasing environmental pressure.
Scientists from across the world contributed to the IAASTD.
The GLOBIO model was used for an analysis of biodiversity status and trends in the reference scenario.
Results show that without additional technological developments and policy changes global biodiversity is likely to decline further. This is mainly the consequence of the large area of agricultural land needed to feed the human population.
