Barents

The Barents poster is based
on the B1000 data. The layers included are: roads, railways, settlements
and traffic sites. A vegetation layer is included where vegetated
areas are classified as forested areas. Utilities are taken from
the DCW data
Roads
All Europavei, Riksvei, Fylkesvei or Lokalvei roads. Private roads
are excluded, as are tractor roads and footpaths; roads not maintained
in wintertime are also excluded.
Railways
All train tracks on ground or on bridges; tunnels are excluded.
All connections points (traffic sites) related to roads/railways/planes/ferries
are included.
Settlements
All major cities to villages and smaller populated areas.
Forest
All forest classifications, from high productive forest to taller
thicket in the mountains.
Utilities
Power transmission lines, telephone and telegraph lines, over- and
underground pipelines are included if they are considered as important
landscape features. On the Barents Poster, distances differ
between forested and non-forested areas, as forested areas have
4 times less impact (shorter distance) than bare areas.

Data sources
B1000 is a dataset covering the Barents region.
It is a recent project initiated by the regional mapping and land surveying
organisations in northern Sweden, Finland, Norway and Russia, collectively
called Barents GIT.
The data are supposedly up-to-date, and based on the newest available
maps in each country. The DCW is a digital
cartographic database based on the United States Operational Navigational
Chart Series (ONC), scale 1:1,000,000. It was derived from flight charts
made for aerial navigation. The data were collected between 1968 - 1989.
The DCW was released by the DMA US Defence Mapping Agency in 1992.
