GLOBIO is participating in NaturaConnect, a 4-year Horizon Europe project.
A new European nature network
Building upon the existing Natura 2000 sites, a new Trans-European Nature Network (TEN-N) is an integral factor to the success of the EU 2030 Biodiversity Strategy. Implementation of the TEN-N will create a functionally connected system of nature reserves, including ecological corridors across Europe. The network will facilitate species migration, reduce genetic isolation, and sustain healthy ecosystems that are climate change resilient and provide multiple benefits to people.
The NaturaConnect project
The Horizon Europe NaturaConnect project aims to develop a blueprint of the new TEN-N through an integration of stakeholder engagement across scales in an interdisciplinary effort to develop spatial planning policy supporting tools. The project brings together experts from 22 partner institutions, jointly coordinated by the International Institute for Applied System Analysis (IIASA), the German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv) and Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU).
NaturaConnect and GLOBIO
To design a future-robust TEN-N, the multifunctionality of landscapes and ecosystems and their contributions to people need to be considered. As part of NaturaConnect, we will therefore further develop the GLOBIO-ES model to include a greater selection of key ecosystem services (ES) and to provide spatially explicit predictions and projections of ES for current and potential future conditions.
